208 | Bertha Alice Pendergrass, 98, Springfield, died Sunday, at 10:59 p.m. after a long illness. She was born on June 2, 1910, in Kensley, Kansas to James and Liddie Rogers. She was one of nine children. She was united in marriage to Fred Pendergrass and to that union there were three children born; Stanley, Betty and Margaret. After losing her husband in a tragic accident, at age 26, she raised her three children as a single parent. Her focus was always on her family, she loved each one of us deeply and she brought great joy to our lives that we will never forget. Her strong faith in God took her through many tragedies and heartaches while always keeping her joy and love for life. She was preceded in death by her husband Fred; two children, Stanley E. Pendergrass and Margaret Bagley, and two granddaughters, Vanessa Lee and Karen Womack, and seven siblings. She is survived by her daughter, Betty Pfeifer and husband Ed, a sister, Dorothy Bass, all of Springfield; 10 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and 15 great-great grandchildren. Graveside services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Hopedale Cemetery, near Ozark. Visitation will be Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. in Greenlawn Funeral Home North. Everyone that met Bertha fell in love with her. 216 | daughter of Howard & Frances Bragonier Southall Catherine Jane Southall, 67, of Henderson, Nevada, formerly of Cedar Falls and Colorado Springs, Colorado died Friday, September 5, 2014 in Edgewood, Iowa, after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born July 15, 1947, in Cedar Falls, the daughter of Howard and Frances (Bragonier) Southall. Cathy graduated from Malcolm Price Laboratory School, attended UNI, and graduated from Regis College in Colorado Springs. She proudly served in the United States Air Force with tours in Vietnam, Philippines, Thailand, Germany and Alaska, retiring after twenty years. She continued working in Colorado Springs, retiring again, and moving to Henderson. She leaves many good friends in both places and in Thailand. She is survived by two sisters, Carole Christner of Brighton, Iowa and Cynthia (Michael) Meyer of Edgewood, Iowa; two brothers, John (Holly) Southall of Cedar Falls and Robert (Jayne) Southall of Cedar Rapids, many nieces and nephews and their children. Cathy was preceded in death by her parents; one brother Thomas Southall and one nephew, Randy Christner. The family will greet friends at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 9, 2014, followed by committal services at 2:30 p.m. in Cedar Valley Memorial Gardens Cemetery, both in Cedar Falls. 217 | Dee J. Valentine passed away in his home on Tuesday, April 3rd, 2012, after a long and productive life. Born February 25, 1911, in Brigham City, Utah, D.J. was the son of Abraham Lawrence and Erma Jeppsen Valentine. His adoptive parents were Hyrum and Rose Ellen Valentine. D.J. was preceded in death by two wives, Alice Higham and Roma Carter; his son, Dennis Valentine; and a stepdaughter, Jill Carter. He is survived by his daughter, Michele Miller; four stepchildren, Court Carter, Rondi Carter, Forrest Carter, and Robin Bailey; their spouses; and many grand and great grandchildren. A retired teacher and decorated army veteran, D.J. traveled extensively during his life. He even traveled to Germany and Switzerland with his second wife on a couple's mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. His faith was very important to him and he continued his temple work regularly up until two weeks before his death. His greatest wish was for all of his family to be active members in the church. Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 7, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at the Los Alisos Chapel in Mission Viejo, California. 247 | From Findagrave: JoAnn Buck, daughter of Joner and Golden (Alexander) Pendergrass was born on June 15, 1934, in Springfield, Missouri and passed away on February 16, 2006, in Big Cabin, Oklahoma, at the age of seventy-one. JoAnn was saved in 1950 and was a member of the First Assembly of God Church of Mountainburg, Arkansas. In her free time, she enjoyed collecting dolls, playing on her computer, shopping, reading her bible, listening to gospel music, talking to people and spending time with her cat, Amy. She is survived by her two daughters, Joyce James and her husband Jim and Sandra Langley and her husband Thomas, both of Mountainburg, Arkansas; one step-son, Gerry Buck, of Mansfield, Arkansas; one brother, Gary Pendergrass and his wife Anita, of Springfield; three sisters, Betty Warren, of Springfield, Donna Rogers and her husband Kenny, also of Springfield and Linda Melton and her husband Ron, of Halltown; twelve grandchildren and twenty-six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Garland; one sister, Louise Goble and one daughter, Billie Sue Maggard. JoAnn never met a stranger. From going up and hugging a person in K-Mart "That just needed a hug that day" to taking a present to the postmaster. She loved people. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends for her humorous wit, her contagious laughter, endearing smile and adventurous ways. An angel has left this earth and entered Heaven.
