Is now herding sheep and has been doing so for 4 years he has herded sheep in the winter when it was cold and I guess that accounts for him not having a mustache yet is not married yet but I guess he won’t be single long or at least I hope not.
Then comes John Elmer Valentine who would be 20 years old but he died when he was as babe.
Now we come to Mary Ellen Valentine who would be 18 years old but died when 16 years old she was about 5 feet tall and weighed 115 pounds she was light complected with long golden hair had been to Salt Lake City University and graduated there she came home and went west to Grouse Creek and taught school at the age of 16 she taught one quarter and came home and stayed just one week when she took sick and died after suffering 10 weeks with Tiphoid fever.

Brigham City, Feb. 23, 1884
Got up out of bed. Done the chores and got my breakfast when T. Wight came in and told me we would go to the sheep herd in a wagon that night at 12 o’clock. I was all day preparing for the trip and an Oyster supper before I went. Well that evening I and Tennie, Sylvester and Bernice Aquilla, and Lillian had a nice time at our Oyster supper till 11 o’clock when I took Tennie home. At the door I ask for a kiss she said she was to young and had never let the boys kiss her. I went home feeling a little hurt and thinking of my journey. We did not go to the sheep herd that night but the next day. So I went to bed. Tennie had told me of a dream she had had, it was something like this. There was a picnic at Susanna Boothes we were both there. I wanted Tennie to go away. She thought I was cutting off her fingers. While I do doing so she said quit but I told her it did not hurt so kept on. That night I had a dream like this. I thought we were a waltzing (I and Tennie) in a large room when on looking to the north east corner of the hall I saw Ellen. I would not dance any more but we went over to the place where she was. She took a hold of my hand and I of Tennie and led us through the door into to a dark passage. While leading us along I was very timid but they took me along telling me that it did not hurt. We were in a large cave now and Ella asked me and Tennie which opening we should take. The one was bright and clear the other was dark and gloomy. We were afraid to say either at first but we had been traveling in dark so we took the dark one to the right left and at last emerged into a large opening on the top of a mountain from which we could see a large beautiful valley which we thought was in the Spiritual World. Ellen left us and we tried to find our way back. While on the way I fell and woke.
24th
Had an early breakfast and started for the herd with Thad, Mike and myself. That day I read a funny book entitled The Bad Boy and his Pa. That night we camped at Dutch Henry’s Ranch where it cost me 50¢ for supper and team.
25th
Made an early start breakfast at Blue Creek and finished reading the Bad Boy and Pa. Traveled all day in snow too [sic] feet deep on the Promintory [sic]. Camped that night at Salt Wells in a rain storm.
26th
Left Salt Wells early and breakfasted at John Sparks that morning which cost me 25¢. Left there and found the herd between the Rail Road and (?at) Point.
27th
We started to camp this morning and went about 2 miles and stopped for the day.
28th
Made an early start and traveled about 4 miles in mud 2½ inches deep.
29th
Breakfasted and then traveled to Monument Mountain about 3 miles.
March 1st
Traveled up on Monument Mountain and left too [sic] sheep. Started to keep this diary on this day first day of March 1884.
2nd
Traveled up about 2 miles farther on the mountain. Killed one mutton and had a sheep die. Doctored sheep this evening. Had a very peculiar dream. I thought that there was a sociable gathering at the M. T. E. Writing. Hans Rober, Frank and Tom had the girls there when Sylvester Aquilla and I went and got them. I took Minnie Laveland for my partner and we all went over to our house. I did not notice Aunt Tennie. She thought I was angry at her and she came and spoke to me and wished to make it up with me. While we were talking I thought I was arrested for something and taken to prison. Tennie pleaded(?) for me and followed. They led her in with me and we made it up as good as ever I thought that a couple of young gentlemen. Frank and Hans came in and said it did not look very well for us to be in there and so they acted very rough with Tennie as they were taking her away. I tried to help her but in the fracus [sic] I was waked up.
3rd
We pulled up about 2 miles farther to day through ½ foot of snow on Monument. We saw about 25 head of deer and cleaned our old Remington and followed them without success. This evening I have started to copy down my notes on Kirkhams Planarama on the book of Mormon.
4th
It rained all day and I stayed in camp studying all day as the sheep were all right until evening when August, Lawrence and I played poker for ½ ¢ and ante and I came out with 3¢ a head. No end of funny dreams. I dreamt that there was Sunday School Union in the Tabernacle after it was out I started down the street. I thought Sylvester Cahell called me back and as I was about to cross the bridge I dropped my gloves and went about picking them up when Tennie and several other girls stepped out to the bridge. I was on my knees and they did not see me and I did not notice them but just as they came near me I rose and it frightened them. Tennie Snow begged pardon for running up against me and I begged pardon for frightening them. Then I went on over to Sylvester and we went down to their house where there was a crowd of young folks gathered when supper was ready they wanted me to in the Parlor and bring Aunt Tennie out to supper. I went to the door looked through the light and saw her and Minnie. They were laughing at me and I turned around and said I would not go in there after Tennie just then. August punched me in the ribs and told me to get up and make a fire and get breakfast.
5th
After breakfast this morning I went over to Thads camp with Lawrence where I stayed reading the History of Frank and Jessie James till after dinner. Then I went down to our sheep and built a fire under the large green foliage of a cedar and there a stayed all afternoon studying phisiology [sic] and reading a book entitled Rose Fleming. I then went to camp and after supper we went to Thads again and had a five hundred game of poker. I lost at first but luck changed and came out with 10¢ ahead. Rained all day.
6th
To day we made a start for the Promintory. Traveled about 4 miles, left one sheep and found one dead one. I am at the present time cooking supper for three hungry shepherds which consists of 6 common sized loaves of bread, too frying pans of mutton, a pick of beans, some stewed fruit, too gallons of coffee, 1 of syrup, etc.
7th
It stormed all last night. The sheep were not contented so we passed a restless night and got up early this morning and started to move in a snow storm. When we got near Salt Wells Barren where there was plenty of mud we counted our black sheep and had 236 of them. In the fracus I got in to a puddle of sticky mud up to my knees. To day I learnt the words to a song but never intend to sing it as there is no tune in me.
8th
This morning after breakfast we moved camp 2 miles and then August went home after being away 3 ½ months. We had one sheep die to day.
9th
I have been herding sheep all day in the rain.
10th
It has been very cold to day. This morning Lawrence and I went over the Wights camp. When we came back we got our horses and moved camp under a hill in a patch of cedars.
11th
To day I have been herding sheep with Lawrence. We had a big fire in some cedars. Have been studying the Articles of Confederation. We heard to day that a large piece of ice had taken away all the bridges on Bear river in Salt Lake Valley.
12th
This morning I went to Joseph Mirrill’s camp. We got out sheep mixed with his to day but not very bad. He thinks about 50. 8 dead sheep we have found the remains of. To day it has been pleasant weather.
13th
I moved camp about one mile south to day under a large hill. We are camped on a (beuck) of rolling hills right under a large steep side hill covered with slide rocks. At the top is a very large magnificent cliff and the hills are covered with cedars, snow and yellow bunch grass. After I moved I went over on the Promintary through the snow to Batimanse camp. We have been intending to move our sheep over there but there is to mutch [sic] snow. After I came to camp I found that Mike [Scow] had moved his camp within 200 yards of us so we had to night herd to keep from getting mixed. We went down to his camp and stay till 11 o’clock and then went to camp and then to bed.
14th
To day I have been herding the sheep and passing away the time with an interesting book.
15th
I have been sick with the headache all day. It has been dark and rainy to day. I will relate what happened to day. Well I was out in the rain this afternoon when a small bunch of sheep started to run away. I followed in hot pursuit for some time with my overcoat on but finally got to sweating and then took it off and ran without it. Well you bet I did run for all that’s out. My faithful dog Flowe followed close at my heels. I finally exhausted and sent her after them. She soon brought them to me. I was angry at the sheep and just thought I would give them a run for fun but as I did not feel like running myself, I thought that I would make Flowe drive them. This she refused and got a good beating for it. After the whipping she drove them the wrong way and I could not stop her. So she got another. Then she drove them right and I felt sorry as she is always faithful.
16th
A bright and clear day to day I have finished reading a book entitled [A Wathan] hater. I have just killed a mutton. Had one sheep die.
17th
I went over to Joseph Merrell’s camp and borrowed about 15lbs of flour. O. Jensen told me that he had seen 4 dead sheep belonging to us, 3 of them killed by Kyotes. I lent Lawrence $1.00 to day.

This morning I got up my horses and moved camp and then herded sheep the rest of the day. This evening we doctored some sheep.
19th
It has been snowing most all night and I have had the (Blues) and felt anxious all day. Expected August all day but he did not come.
20th
Adventures. This morning after breakfast I went up on the Promontory after our horses to move camp with. I traveled about 1 mile, saw 8 Kyotes and found the horses. Well on the Promontory there was about 1 foot on crusted snow. On top of this, about 4 inches of loose snow which fell last night and to day. As I was taking my horses to camp I had to cross a little flat in the center of which was a deep gutter filled with snow. I walked across on top of the snow but it would not hold the horses so down they went and I had to dig and scratch and work to get them out but finally succeeded. Went and moved camp and then started to go over to O. Jensen’s camp to get some flour. I got lost in a snow storm but finally found his camp and got 25 pounds of flour then I started back, Traveling through big sage brush and mud with an overcoat, a large pair of gum boots and 25 pounds of flour is not very much fun. So ends a very rough and disagreeable day.
21th
Last night our sheep left camp and the first thing I done to day was to hunt them up. When I found them I knew that they were not all there so in the afternoon I went hunting sheep. I saw Mr. A. Steed and he put me on track of them about 500 which had been there all night and day before. Nephi started to herd for us to day.

He said if I did not quit there would be a fuss. Well there was a fuss and in it he struck me with a whip stalk. Then we quarreled a little while and that ended the fracus. I thought we went up in to the canyon when we got up south of Mantua we came to a large snow drift and could not go any farther. We determined to go some place else and came back home. We did not stop but went on. I thought that there was a nice bathing place at the big pond so we determined to have a bath. I thought we had been bathing a long time when some of them went out and their dripping costume frightened my horses. Bill got [Lasse] with the harness on and ran out in to the water. He was swimming for a large patch of moss thinking (I suppose) it was land. I swam out and tried to head him but got caught in the moss and came near drowning. I thought I was struggling to move very near strangled and black in the face. I raised one of my hands when Heber Smith came to save me. He picked me up and tossed me about a rod. I thought I lit with my back on a pile of wood. I balanced myself here till he came to me again. He rested awhile and then carried me out. I thought Sylvester, Bernice and Tennie put me in to the carriage and took me home. Just then the sheep gave a rush and the bells began to ring and woke me up. When I awoke I felt weak and exhausted.

Sheep Camp, May 1/84
I have been reading Elder Gibson’s and the Reverend Mr. Woodman’s public discussion and also herding sheep all day. We have had 22 ewes to day. I will here try to relate a dream that I had on the 20th of April which I forgot to put down then. I was lying on the east side of a hill near our sheep camp. It was in the afternoon. I had been working hard all day. On this hill I could get a fair view of Brigham City while lying there. I went to sleep and dreamed that Tennie [in Morris code] suddenly appeared on a horse at the foot of the hill. I thought that I jumped up and hollowed hollo! I thought that the horse could not climb up the hill so Tennie [Morris code] tied him up to a bush. I thought that I wanted to go down and help her but I cold not move out of my track. When she got up to me she reached out her hand but I was powerless to take it. She then spoke to me but I could not speak. She then turned to go but did not get far when I again had strength and ran and caught her and explained why I did not move. Then we went down the west side of a hill to the sheep camp. When we got there it was supper time. She said she would cook supper because she could make such nice bread. I made a fire and sat down on the wagon tongue while she got supper. I thought we eat supper and then went back up on the top of the hill. I went down to the horse with her and helped her on and seen her start. Just as she vanished out of sight I awoke and found it really was supper time. The next day I composed a piece entitled Baking bread.

This morning after breakfast we started to move through Danish town. As we were traveling through the place a man named Myers tried to stop our sheep from going on the side walk and as there was a large puddle of mud in the road we had no other place to go but on the side walk. I politely asked him to let us pass on but he insisted on making the sheep take the mud! For it I kindly asked him the second time when he got so angry that he called the sheep herders all kinds of rough names winding up by stating that I was the worst one in the whole pile. When he got through I walked up to him with a club in my hand and told him to keep still and threatened if he did not move and let the sheep pass I would knock him down. He run for the house as fast as possible. We crossed Bear River and stayed by the [slne] last night.
