Some facts a 5 year old remembers of her great-grandmother Martha Snyder Baird, as told to her while her grandfather Thomas Mayne was so ill from a home gall bladder surgery (was bedfast a long time ).

My dad and mother brought cobs of wood I was to put in heating stove one at a time. My folks were picking Grandpa's corn and doing the chores. I was also to put a stick of wood in the kitchen cook stove regularly then move the stew to front of stove to be hot for dinner. Also to move the coffee pot to Grandpa who was so ill. The stew was of turnips, potatoes, carrots and some boiling meat.

Grandma Martha couldn't walk very well - just shuffled - but could and was always piecing quilts. She told me about the path and the little triangular red seat to pause and reflect when going through the Flower garden Quilt.

She told how she and her husband met. He was a sailor and when his boat was in the English Channel after he had met her in a pub. He tied his good clothes high on his head, dived in and swam to shore. He dressed up and would go see her where she was employed in a pub. Eventually they wanted to marry but both their parents were against this. Finally they decided to sail to America and were married on ship.

They landed in Pennsylvania near Harrisburg. Martha worked in a pub here and he worked in a foundry where he made good money. They then moved to near Van Orin where they purchased the 40 acres and built a home -known as Baird's Corners.

The five year old was Grace Mayne Wright whose parents were Gilmer and Anna Mayne and told to Florence Rasmussen on October 29,1981.
